  • Why is the Nintendo DS such an important platform? Since the advent of the Game Boy, mobile game platforms have been just as important and exciting as the home video-game consoles. In some ways, mobile game platforms such as the DS have developed in more meaningful ways than their stationary counterparts. While both have seen major advances in technology, the recent ubiquity of mobile gaming is unmatched. With almost a 150 million units sold worldwide, making it the best-selling console in gaming history, the Nintendo DS is a perfect example of the popularity of mobile gaming.

Credit Nintendo for many of the exciting moments in the history of mobile gaming, as the debut of each of Nintendo's portable consoles is always a major event. The Game & Watch, the Game Boy, the Game Boy Color, the Game Boy Advance, the Game Boy Advance SP, the Game Boy Micro, and even the much maligned Virtual Boy have all affected the video-game industry and they way we play games, but the Nintendo DS (NDS) might have been the biggest turning point of all.

Besides being the first of Nintendo's handheld platforms to support full 3D graphics (comparable to the Nintendo 64), the letters "DS" in Nintendo DS stand for the dual screens it features, which are arranged in a clamshell design reminiscent of Nintendo's first handheld video game, the Game & Watch. The bottom screen is also touch-sensitive, allowing the player to interact with the games by either using his fingers or the stylus included with the Nintendo DS. In addition, the Nintendo DS also features a microphone, making voice commands another viable method for interacting with certain games; and wireless capabilities, allowing players to play with one another either locally or over the Internet.

The Nintendo DS has been a commercial and critical success for Nintendo, but the release of its first redesign, the Nintendo DS Lite, accelerated its popularity. The Nintendo DS Lite includes all of the features of the original Nintendo DS and introduces the addition of brighter screens, a lighter, slicker design, and longer battery life. Since the success of the Nintendo DS Lite, Nintendo has released two other redesigns. The first is the Nintendo DSi. Similar in its shape to the Nintendo DS Lite, it adds a camera and access to the DSiware store, where players can buy small, affordable games and applications. The other is the Nintendo DSi XL, which is larger and has bigger screens.
